Too often, Black Women and girls are assigned identities rather than simply being allowed to develop their own. These limits placed upon us make it very difficult to fully figure out our true selves, because another identity, has been given to us.
We have all seen these:
- The Strong Black Woman
- The Angry Black Woman
- The Jezebel/modern day Video Vixen
What does it mean to be thrust into a racist others view of who and what you should be? It means lots of pain. It means self de-valuation and self hatred. It means lacking authenticity and not even knowing who you truly are and what your gifts are. It can mean Depression, Anxiety, social isolation.
Black Women must continue to be strong role models and examples for Black girls. We must have the courage to explore the ways racist ideals and structures have been put in place in our lives, and psyches, and explore how we can get out of them and empower our daughters, sisters, wives, friends to also be empowered to be their authentic selves. We must accept one another when we are different. We must value one another not for sameness but for the ability to connect, grow, heal and continue to move forward.
If you're struggling with self identity or want to gain insight into yourself start therapy or begin it again. Sometimes having a therapist that gets you will make all the difference.
