Monique Watt
I was born in the United States raised in the Christian Faith. Both my parents were born in Jamaica West Indies and migrated to the U.S in 1973. My ethnic background is Jamaican American. I attended Medgar Evers College and I graduated in 2019. I attended Alfred University and graduated with my masters in mental health counseling in June 2021.
I have a desire to help others and having direct impact on the lives and well-being of clients, which leads to happier and healthy lives. I have experience working as a Paraprofessional with the Dept of Education, I worked for the Jewish Guild for the blind, I have been a Childcare Provider, and even a Nanny for a family. I currently work as a therapist with Amira for Her, a division of MA Therapy LLC.
I want to bring more awareness to Mental health and to crush the stigma in our community, Mental health is wealth! My focus is on people of color, improving Mental health care, building trust and strong relationships.
I have dealt with racism in many ways, hearing things that were untrue about my race, my culture. I used to ignore it, but when I realized that I was not helping I began to speak up and educate the people saying these things. I believe that we all have biases, and we must work on it daily. When you don't know something- ask questions and educate yourself.
I was trained in Stress management, (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) CBT approach, Adlerian (brief, psychoeducational, goal oriented) approach.
Clients say that I am approachable, empathetic, non-judgmental and an active listener. I work with youth in middle childhood (age 6-12), adolescence (age 13-17) , adults and older adults.
My hobbies are traveling, cooking and playing the drums. I am a single mother of a handsome 14-year-old boy, I have 2 nieces and a Grandniece, I love cats and I love spending time with my family.
