David: A Personal Reflection on Loss
As the founder of MA Therapy, LLC, my life’s work has been dedicated to supporting the mental health of Black and Brown communities. I’ve poured my heart and soul into creating a space where our voices are heard, our pain is acknowledged, and our healing is prioritized. This mission is deeply personal to me—rooted in my own experiences, my love for my community, and my belief in the power of mental health care to transform lives. But despite my efforts and the work we do at MA Therapy, I am now faced with a devastating tragedy that underscores the deep flaws and inequities in the mental health system—a system that ultimately failed my own family.
My beloved nephew, David, was a 36-year-old Black man who brought immense joy and light into my life from the moment he was born. David was a remarkable person—bright, kind, a business owner, a father, spouse, uncle, brother, and more, and he was full of potential. He had a smile that could light up a room and a spirit that touched everyone who knew him. He was more than just my nephew; he was a part of my heart, a source of pride and love in me. His future seemed full of promise, yet the system we trusted to support him in his darkest moments let him down.
David’s struggle was not just his own—it was a reflection of the challenges that so many Black men face in a world that often fails to see their full humanity. Despite seeking help, despite our family’s efforts to support him, David was met with the same barriers that too many Black and Brown individuals encounter when navigating the mental health system: a lack of access to culturally competent care, a shortage of resources, and the pervasive stigma that surrounds mental health in our communities. These barriers, compounded by the systemic racism that is all too present in our society, contributed to a tragic outcome that should never have happened.
The pain of losing David is indescribable. It is a grief that has settled deep within my soul, a wound that will never fully heal. But in the midst of this heartache, I am reminded of the importance of the work we do at MA Therapy, and our divisions Amira for Her, Amira for Him, and Amira for Them. David’s story, his life, and his untimely death fuel my resolve to fight even harder for those who are struggling. We must do better—our communities deserve better.

In honor of David, and in honor of all those who have been failed by the system, I vow to continue this fight—to push for change, to advocate for better care, and to ensure that no one else has to endure the pain that our family is now experiencing. We must break down the barriers that prevent our communities from accessing the care they need, and we must do it together.
David, you will always be in our hearts. Your life had meaning, and your memory will inspire us to keep moving forward, even in the face of overwhelming grief. Rest in peace, my dear nephew, I will ALWAYS love you dearly. Your light will never fade.
