Navigating Adulthood from Childhood Poverty: A Personal Journey as a Psychotherapist
As a psychotherapist in private practice, I have the unique privilege of understanding firsthand the impact of childhood poverty on adulthood. Growing up in a family of seven children, poverty was an ever-present reality that shaped our daily lives. It was a struggle to make ends meet, and day-to-day life involved facing numerous challenges.
Living with a father battling schizophrenia and substance abuse only compounded the difficulties we faced. Our family's dynamics were deeply affected, and as a child, I felt a strong sense of responsibility to help my mother and my siblings.
Seeking safety from the turmoil, my mother took us to live in a domestic violence shelter for a period, and it was during those times that I learned the importance of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
Overcoming the adversities of poverty and living with a parent's mental health challenges was no easy feat. I witnessed how my father's untreated schizophrenia hindered his ability to maintain consistent employment, eventually placing the sole responsibility of providing for all of us on my mother's shoulders.
Being hungry on a daily basis was a common occurrence for quite some time, unfortunately. Too proud to accept food stamps or any form of government assistance, my mother instead worked long hours, leaving us to fend for ourselves for significant portions of our days and nights. Hungry stomachs being filled with sugarless hot black tea, asking for an extra serving at school lunch, or eating a friend's leftovers during lunchtime at school was common. After a long day of play during the summer months, before school lunch programs existed, I vividly remember the joy and excitement of finding a piece of candy on the floor or stairs of the building we lived in, as my rumbling stomach might have found something to calm and soothe it, even if for just a short amount of time.
These personal experiences ignited a deep passion within me to support others navigating the impact of poverty on their adulthood. As a psychotherapist, I approach my work with empathy and understanding, recognizing the complexity of emotions and challenges that poverty-related traumas can bring. The lasting effects of childhood poverty on adulthood are profound and multifaceted. With empathy and understanding, I strive to help individuals navigate the complexities of emotions and challenges that poverty-related traumas can bring.
