My ethnic background is black African-Caribbean. I attended college for the first time in 1984. I spent 3 1/2 years in Long Island University Brooklyn campus; I took time off, which was only supposed to be for a semester, it turned out to be 30 years later when I went back to college. I went to Toro college, where I completed for my associates degree, and went on to receive my bachelors in 2017.
I received my master’s in science and education in June of 2022. I am currently in school finishing my last class in my internship. I went into counseling because of the situation that is happening around the world with the pandemic. I first wanted to do social work, and when the pandemic began in 2020 that's when I decided I would switch to Mental Health
Counseling. I figure it would be in demand and would be well needed at this time in history.
I have worked in Pediatrics, camp counselor in summer camp, teacher in pre-school, For the past 17 years I have been working as an assistant teacher with the Department of Education. I care about working with black people because I am black. I think there is a stereotype with therapy and black people, and I want to be part of the change about therapy and black people.
I have dealt with racism in my life. I have stood up a few times for myself and there were times that I looked the other way to keep the peace. What I wish that was different about that experience was that the young lady at the time saw me as another human being instead of just a young black girl.
My clinical approach is Psychoanalytic, believing that we're having problems based on our present or our past experiences. I was also train in CBT. I think clients experience me as a friendly and warm person. I have worked with my clients very well. I am a good listener and speak only when necessary. The one thing I would like to share about myself is that I have 11 sisters and five brothers, 175 nieces, grandnieces, and great nieces, nephews, grandnephews, and great nephews. I am a mother of one son.
