Cynthia Green
I was born in England and my parents are from Jamaica. My father passed away when I was young and my mother is still living in England. They were both hard working and came to England to provide a better standard of living and education for their children. I am Black and British.
I graduated from Manchester University, England and graduated with a Degree in Youth and Community Studies and graduated in 2000. I also went to Alfred University and graduated in 2019 with a Masters in School Counseling. I am currently still enrolled at Alfred University and in their Advance Certificate program in Mental Health Counseling.
I have always worked within urban community settings helping Black young people who are struggling in high school academically, at risk of dropping out, and or court involved. Being a counselor was a natural progress for me to extend and improve my skills to help young people in this demographic. I am passionate about trying to help people find the tools to improve their life.
I have worked in many professional counseling roles some of them include a School Guidance Counselor, a Counseling and Casework Service Provider in Brooklyn, NY. A Case and Court Manager Youth Offending Team in Oldham, England, and as a Mentor Coordinator for At Risk Youth with the Manchester Council for Community Relations in England. In my career so far I have been passionate about working with young Black people because they experience a multifaceted layers of barriers, challenges and racism often do not have other people of color who they can get support and guidance from. Often their experiences of services and authoritative figures have been negative. I want to help them to build a positive network and skills, so they can become emotional strong and financially independent.
Growing up in England in the 70’s I experienced a lot of racism from neighbors and while being a student in the education system. I had a good foundation at home and the support of my family who kept me strong and motivated to stay on the right path. I can’t think of anything I wish that would have been different as those experiences have made me stronger and better equipped to deal with life.
While studying at Alfred University in their mental health program I connected with the Cognitive Behavior, Rational Emotive and solution focus style and techniques of counseling. Last year I completed a Life Coaching program which I also enjoyed and learned some new ways to help connect and help motivate others to change. My main work has been in a school setting both students and parents appreciate they I will go above and beyond to help. Many of my students have referred to me as “Mom” and I value myself on being honest, transparent and maintain open communication.
I love connecting with my Jamaican roots and love the food, music and cultural events. I enjoy traveling when possible and have a long list of places I still want to visit. I have aspirations of setting up my own practice and providing counseling services. Finally, I enjoy connecting with other and also want to start an event group for people who are working and or living in New York who are from England.
