I was born in Brooklyn, NY to two Jamaican parents with a strong Christian faith. I am a “Jamerican” (Jamaican born parents but I was born in America). I also have German heritage (hence the last name). I attended SUNY College at Old Westbury and graduated in 2010. I attended Adelphi University for my graduate degree- a Masters in Social Work and graduated in 2013.
The field of Social Work was inevitable for me. I was always a helper, shoulder to cry on, supporter, listener, server, and giver. I was blessed to always have strong, consistent and positive supports in my life and I realized that not all my peers had that so I went into a field where I can ensure that I can be of service to individuals, families, communities in need no matter how big or small the need is. I was born to help others.
Some of my professional roles have been:
Case Planner with Community Counseling and Mediation’s Preventive Program.
School Social Worker at Brooklyn Excelsior Charter School
School Social Worker and Transition Specialist with a public school
I care about working with Black people because I care and love my people. Growing up in the inner city to a Caribbean family I saw the effects and results of systemic and institutional racism, lack of resources, barriers to services, inequality and so much more. I want to do my part to educate, fight against injustices and provide the services and resources that I can. I also am passionate about mental health and breaking the stigma in our community and normalizing seeking help from professionals and your village.
I have dealt with systemic and institutional racism and injustices rather than personally. Unfortunately I have always been a victim of this however as an adult I am more aware of it therefore I make a conscious decision to address it when I come across. Even if I can’t change the larger system and I continue to educate myself and follow the leaders who are fighting this important fight.
I utilize two clinical approaches in my work. I decide which one to use based on the clients problems. I
Clients have told me they experience me as understanding, nonjudgmental, relatable, down to earth, encouraging, humorous, empathetic, relaxed but structured sessions. Also, importantly, I provide homework and feedback.
