My name is Hetha Stephen-Lawrence, and I’m glad you’re here.
I work with children, adolescents, and adults who are navigating challenges such as anxiety, depression, stress management, behavioral dysregulation, and concerns related to self-esteem. I strive to create a supportive and collaborative space where clients feel understood and empowered to work through life’s challenges at their own pace.
I was born in Linden, Guyana and spent much of my childhood there before migrating to the United States with my family at age 10. During my early years, I was raised by my great-grandmother while my parents worked. This experience instilled in me a deep appreciation for family, community support, and the important role that caregivers play in shaping a child’s emotional development. As a Black Guyanese woman, my cultural background continues to inform the empathy and perspective I bring to my work with clients and families.
I earned my Bachelor of Science in Education from SUNY College at Old Westbury and my Master of Science in Education in School Counseling from Brooklyn College. I am currently pursuing additional training toward LMHC licensure to further expand my clinical practice.
For more than 26 years, I have worked within the New York City Department of Education, including over 20 years as a school counselor supporting elementary and middle school students. In this role, I have worked closely with children and families from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, particularly supporting low-income families and students considered at risk. My work has involved collaborating with parents, teachers, and school staff to help students strengthen their emotional development, manage stress, and navigate challenges both inside and outside the classroom.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, I have witnessed firsthand the increasing mental health needs among children and families, along with the shortage of accessible mental health services. This experience motivated me to pursue expanded clinical training in psychotherapy so I can continue supporting individuals and families in deeper and more comprehensive ways.
My clinical approach integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Play Therapy, and Person-Centered Therapy. I believe that clients often already possess many of the strengths and skills needed to grow, and therapy can provide a supportive environment where those strengths can be recognized and strengthened. My goal is to help clients better understand their experiences, develop practical coping strategies, and build confidence in their ability to navigate life’s challenges.
Clients and families often describe my style as calm, gentle, and approachable. I prioritize building strong therapeutic relationships grounded in trust, acceptance, and genuine care. Many parents view our work together as a collaborative partnership focused on supporting their child’s emotional growth and well-being.
Outside of my professional work, I enjoy spending time with my dog and find it deeply restorative to return home and unwind with him after a long day.
If you or your child are navigating anxiety, stress, emotional challenges, or changes in life, I would be honored to support you.
