Yovanka Green, LMSW, Therapist
My name is Yovanka Green and I was born in Brooklyn, NY , I currently reside in Long Island. I am a first generation Hispanic-American, my parents were born and raised in the Dominican Republic. I received my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social Work from Long Island University in Brooklyn, I also hold a Master’s degree in Education from the same institution. I received my Master’s in Social work in May of 2017. I became interested in becoming a social worker back in High School, I worked alongside the school social worker and guidance counselor in the clinic my high school had and loved the passion and work that was being done with the students. I researched schools and programs and began my studies at York College before I took some time off to have my first child, I then returned to my studies by transferring to LIU.
I have worked as a therapist with a large non profit since 2017, and have really enjoyed engaging clients in therapy.
I have been an administrator in different capacities at LIU since 2006, I worked in admissions helping students apply for college, at a doctoral program and presently I am the Director of Field Education for a large Social Work program.
I am really passionate about working with individuals of color due to the underrepresentation that is present in both the therapeutic role and clients. I think that as people of color we are often told that seeking help/therapy is seen as a weakness, I hope that with my advocacy and work with the population we can begin to destigmatize therapy in communities of color.
My clinical approach is person centered, I consider myself a Rogerian therapist and always try to meet my clients where they are at with an empathetic approach.
I believe my clients consider me to be open minded, an active listener and a solution focused therapist. I like to build a great rapport with my clients and help guide them towards reaching rational and obtainable goals.
I am a married mother of three children, my son has a disability that does not stop him in any way, he is one of the bravest kids I know. We are a family that loves Japanese anime, we often dress up in anime characters for Halloween and attend cons promoting the art work and series. I enjoy reading manga (Japanese graphic novels) and horror novels, my favorite author is Stephen King. Our family has 3 cats, and my favorite past time is playing video games with my kids (we own every console). I am also an aunt, I have 8 nieces and 3 nephews as well as a great aunt to 3 nieces and 5 nephews.
